Seating and Seatbelts
With the expansion of limousines, the UK passenger laws have stayed rigidly at a maximum of eight passengers per limousine regardless of the size. However, here in the UK, we are one of the most rigid, as the US limo hire companies are allowed to fill their limousines to capacity, as long as there are enough seatbelts and the weight restrictions of the limos are not infringed.
When any type of vehicle is built, it is labelled with a gross vehicle weight limit, indicating how much extra weight can be added to the vehicle. This includes everything put into the vehicle, and in the case of limousines, this includes the contents of the bar, the weight of the TV screens, the chauffeur, the passengers and their luggage.
Once the weight limit on any vehicle has been exceeded, it risks malfunction, not only in the body, but also in the chauffeur’s ability to control the vehicle’s braking and steering, making an overladen limousine very dangerous.
To ensure the safety of everyone on the road and in the limousine, the weight rating is assessed, and if it is expected that the limousine will carry more than the recommended amount of weight, adjustments are made to the body, supports, steering, suspension, braking systems and all other parts of the vehicle which have to work harder to pull and control more weight.
These things must be adjusted, as when a vehicle is stretched to a limousine, the weight limit does not automatically increase unless these changes are made.
This may be why the manufactures of the Hummers do not recommended their vehicles be stretched and take no responsibility for any accidents caused by a stretch Hummer.
The limo hire companies know that and although the Hummer manufacturers won’t acknowledge the safety adjustments made to their vehicles to make them safe to be stretched, the limo hire companies and the insurance companies still cover any passengers in an accident involving a stretched limousine.
